Email Sequence
An email sequence is a series of pre-written, automated emails sent to prospects on a defined schedule to drive engagement and replies.
An email sequence is a series of pre-scheduled emails sent automatically to a prospect or group of prospects over a set period, designed to generate engagement and move them toward a desired action like booking a meeting.
In outbound sales, sequences are the backbone of prospecting at scale. Instead of manually following up with every lead, SDRs build a sequence — typically 4-8 emails spaced a few days apart — and enroll prospects into it. Each email in the sequence builds on the last, varying the angle, value proposition, or call to action.
What separates a good sequence from spam is personalization and relevance. The best-performing sequences include a personalized first line, reference something specific about the prospect’s company or role, and offer genuine value rather than just asking for time.
For example, a typical outbound sequence might look like: Day 1 — personalized intro email. Day 3 — share a relevant case study. Day 7 — reference a trigger event. Day 10 — breakup email. Each touch should feel intentional, not automated.
Sequences also generate valuable data. By tracking open rates, reply rates, and conversion rates at each step, you can identify which messages resonate and where prospects drop off. This lets you continuously refine your approach based on real performance data.
Modern SDR operations platforms make it straightforward to build, test, and optimize sequences while keeping deliverability and personalization in check.
