Revenue Efficiency

Revenue efficiency measures how effectively a company converts its spending into revenue, often tracked as a burn multiple or magic number.

Revenue efficiency measures how effectively a company converts its go-to-market spending into new revenue. It answers the question: for every dollar we invest in sales and marketing, how much new revenue do we generate? Common metrics include the magic number (net new ARR divided by prior quarter S&M spend), CAC payback period, and the burn multiple (net burn divided by net new ARR).

Revenue efficiency matters in GTM operations because in today’s market, growth at any cost is no longer rewarded. Investors, boards, and executives increasingly focus on efficient growth — generating more revenue per dollar spent rather than simply spending more. Companies with strong revenue efficiency can grow profitably and sustain their trajectory without constant funding injections.

The magic number is one of the most commonly used efficiency metrics. A magic number above 0.75 suggests your GTM investment is efficient and you should consider investing more. Between 0.5 and 0.75 indicates room for optimization. Below 0.5 signals that your GTM spend is not converting into enough revenue to justify the investment.

For example, if you spent $2M on sales and marketing last quarter and generated $1.6M in net new ARR this quarter, your magic number is 0.8 — healthy and worth scaling. If that same spend only generated $600K in new ARR, your magic number is 0.3, signaling significant efficiency problems that need diagnosis before you increase spend.

Improving revenue efficiency requires examining every part of the GTM process: lead quality, conversion rates at each stage, sales cycle length, average deal size, and customer retention. Often the biggest gains come from fixing process breakdowns rather than cutting spend. Analytics that track efficiency metrics across the full funnel help RevOps teams identify specifically where dollars are being wasted and where investments are paying off.
